Third Generation Computers– If you have a keen observation of every aspect of this natural world, you would be acknowledged that the only thing running with time is technology development.

And day by day, it is not only gaining its speed but also accelerating by giving it innovative technologies that we have dreamt of in our lives.

The word technology can directly be linked to the word computer. Since once the computer was invented and rest is history, present, and future too.

Third Generation Computers- History

You would be familiar with the person Charles Babbage. Yes, he is renowned as the father of the computer—the person who kept the idea of the computer and made the Abacus.

The idea was proposed just to ease the complex calculation which we get in real life. Further on, it developed from generation to generation.

And now it is on its reach. Who thought that one day this technology would become an essential part of our life. And now we are nothing if there is no computer.

From our birth in hospital to every step in our life we need a computer. Likewise, we need it in schools, offices, traffic signals, hospitals, railways, transports, entertainment, and almost every part of our life.

In the current pandemic situation, it serves us a lot of help being a means of communication with our family members, online studies, office works, etc.

Well, this perfection by computer is not in just one go. It took several generations to get fully developed, and still, it is in development.

Next, we will talk about how generation by generation, it has evolved itself. We will talk about the third generation computer.

Generation of computer

A generation of a computer can differ from another generation if the technology used and its hardware and software have fundamental changes in it.

And since there is an evolution of new ideas, the latest pictures of implementing their innovative ideas come from there.

In this way, the computer has been developed throughout the years. And at present, there are 5 generations of computers.

1st Generation Computer

This generation’s computers were known between 1946 to 1949, which was based on vacuum tube technology. This was the first step and hence had many faults, especially heating problems.

This generation used punch cards, magnetic tape as input and output memory. It was costly since excessive heat fuse melts down regularly and hence was only affordable by the large organizations.

Example ENIAC, UNIVAC.

2nd Generation Computer

Second-generation computers were developed between the years 1959 and 1965.

These generation computers used transistor-based technology instead of vacuum-based technology and hence made a bit more efficient than the previous one.

This generation used Fortran and COBOL assembly-level language for its software making.

Despite generating less heat and being more efficient, it was still very costly.

Examples IBM 1620, IBM 7094.

3rd Generation Computer

Between the years 1965 to 1971, it was developed. And we can say that it was a turning point in the development of the computer.

Instead of the transistor, an integrated circuit was used. And the reason for being the turning point lies here.

An integrated circuit is a board containing many transistors, resistors, and inductors in one circuit board, making the area very small.

And hence from here, we can see the computer and laptops in the compact form saving a large number of space and energy consumed was also very low compared to the previous ones.

We will talk about it in the later section.

Examples IBM 360 series, HONEYWELL 6000 series

4th Generation Computer

The generation between 1971 and 1980 was popularly known as the 4th generation computers. In these compute Integrated circuits on a large scale were used inside the computer.

A popularly known VLSI microprocessor was used in these computes, making it more reliable, affordable, and efficient than the last one.

Many high-level languages such as c and c++ were now used in the computer, making them advanced.

ExamplesCRAY 1( supercomputer), STAR 1000.

5THGeneration Computer

This generation of computer development was started in 1980 and still developing to date.

It is a modified version of the 4th generation where an integrated circuit has the components in million of a number instead of thousands.

Transistors were made very small, and we’re fixed on the circuit board, making it more energy-efficient and small.

ULSI: Ultra large-scale integrated circuit microprocessors are used in the computer. These computers can be used for significant scale purposes such as gaming, robotics, and many more.

Examples: Laptop, computer, MacBook, Notebook, etc.

A journey through 3rd Gen Computer

Let the 4th and 5th generation computers are the advanced ones, but the footprint on which 4th and 5th became the advanced ones was the 3rd generation computers.

The first integrated circuit, which consists 1000 of transistors, resistors, and many more components in just one circuit board, was installed in the third generation computers.

It was the first energy-efficient computer which was also a portable one. The great revolution of naming computer A personal computer started from it.

Before this era, transistor resistors and different components were used separately, taking more space and energy.

And after this era, only transistors and different components were made smaller so that a large number of features can be fixed on single Integrated chips.

Whatever you say but this idea began with third-generation computers. And with its help now devices are made handy and are under our hand.

The best advantage was that the seed of portability and energy-efficient efficiency was kept in third-generation computers. And now it’s growing as a large tree.

Last Words

Well, here I was, not defending 3rd generation computers and making it a champion. I just wanted you to know how the 3rd generation played an essential role in the popularity of 5th generation computers.
